Is this a good thing for competition? I try and do a little cardio every week but it feels like its seriously making me weaker? Is this true? I feel stronger when i am tight and my tendons feel like a well tuned guitar. cardio makes me feel loose and weak. Any suggestions,?

Steve, I was a certified personal trainer and also a bench press competitor, did heavy deadlifts and squats also. all the power lifters that I know never mixed any cardio while getting ready for competition as they claim it did make them weak when they did mix it up. I can't say that I have expierienced it cause my body fat % was/is always low, But I can tell you that if your wantig to increase or maintain strength, and you are doing cardio too, well what your doing is not only burning fat but also losing muscle. Good way of saying this is ( BURNS MUSCLE FOR FUEL) that's what cardio does. Cardio is good for runners. bicyclers, etc. Cardio is good, but not while trying to stay strong. hope I helped you out with this info Steve

My personal opinion is some cardio following High Intensity Interval Training System known as HIITS for short, would be good. A good arm wrestling match, especially a super match, can exhaust you minimizing your oxygen which your muscles need under heavy stress to perform at their peak. Ever pulled a tough match and been out of breathe? Sustained cardio can deteriorate muscle so avoid that... Look at all of the Kenyan marathon runners... Sticks. Now look at all of the Jamaican sprint runners... Buff. Case in point. Proper cardio can be useful and give an advantage to an arm wrestler. Train cardio using sprint intervals of 2 minutes walk 2 minutes and repeat 5-6 times. This will prepare you for a super match. Sets of heavy squats can also help. Practice breathing normally instead of holding when squatting. A good method for improving oxygen intake while under heavy stress.

LOL... ME TOO! I do do the squats which does help my breathing but have not done the cardio exercise that I posted in some time now. But for anyone looking to improve their stamina for tournaments and such without compromising their strength. The HIITS method is a great way to accomplish it.

I was only a fan of cardio when played football & rugby. Not so much now, after all I'm almost 40! But I do at least 2-3 days a week.
